Mercury retrograde 2026: dates, meaning, and the double retrograde with Venus

Mercury Retrograde Clarity Reading by Ivy Veil: Ivy smiling with her cards between candles, for a letter about Mercury retrograde 2026

You know the feeling, even if you have never looked at a planet in your life. The message lands with the wrong person. The train sits still for no reason anyone can explain. A name you had almost forgotten appears in your inbox, and for a moment the past is standing in the doorway. Then someone says it, half joking and half not: Mercury must be retrograde.

This autumn they will be right, and Mercury has company. From Saturday 24 October 2026 Mercury turns retrograde while Venus is already retrograde, so for almost three weeks the planet of messages and the planet of love both seem to walk backwards together. In this letter you will find the dates, what a retrograde has always been taken to mean, and how to move through these weeks gently instead of bracing against them.

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

The last Mercury retrograde of 2026 runs from Saturday 24 October to Friday 13 November, in Scorpio. Venus has been retrograde since Saturday 3 October and turns direct on 13 November in America and on 14 November in Europe. For almost three weeks both are retrograde together: a double retrograde, and a season for looking back before you move forward.

The dates at a glance

Mercury enters its shadow on Sunday 4 October, when it first crosses the stretch of sky it will later walk back over. It stations retrograde on Saturday 24 October, turns direct on Friday 13 November and leaves its shadow on Monday 30 November, when the slow weeks are truly behind you. All of it happens in Scorpio.

Venus turned retrograde in Scorpio on Saturday 3 October, slips back into Libra on Sunday 25 October, and turns direct in Libra on 13 November, which is already 14 November in European time.

What does Mercury retrograde mean?

Seen from the earth, every planet sometimes seems to slow down, stand still and move backwards through the stars for a while before it carries on. It is a trick of perspective, the way a slower train seems to slide backwards as your own train overtakes it. The word itself comes from the Latin for stepping backwards. Astrology reads that backwards walk as a time for the planet's themes to be revisited. Mercury rules messages, plans, travel and the mind, so its retrograde is said to bring crossed wires and second thoughts, and also second chances: the unfinished conversation, the idea you put on a shelf, the person you meant to call.

Older than any of us

People have watched the wandering stars for as long as there have been clear skies. Mercury carries the name of the Roman messenger of the gods, the Greek Hermes, who carried words between worlds and looked after travellers, traders and anyone with a message to deliver. That is why the planet still rules letters, journeys and conversations, and why its backwards walk has always been felt in exactly those places.

Venus was watched even more closely. In ancient Babylon, astronomers wrote down her appearances and disappearances on clay, year after year, and a copy of those records still survives: the Venus tablet of Ammisaduqa. During her retrograde Venus slips out of sight beside the sun and returns on its other side. The Greeks once gave her two names, Hesperus in the west and Phosphorus, the light-bringer, in the east, before they understood that both were the same star. Long before anyone spoke of retrogrades, people knew that some lights need to disappear for a while before they can shine again.

What this double retrograde asks of you

Mercury turns back in Scorpio, the sign of depth, secrets and things that were never quite finished, so conversations may go deeper than you planned. Venus walks back from Scorpio into Libra, the sign of balance and partnership, so love, money and your own worth ask to be looked at again. Together they make a few weeks in which the past and the unsaid come up, so that they can finally be said and settled. Seen that way, a double retrograde is a gift: a pause in which you can mend what matters before the year closes.

How to move through it gently

Read twice before you send, especially when your heart is beating faster than your fingers. Back up the photos and files you would hate to lose. Give every journey a little extra room. Finish what you started before you begin something new: the unanswered letter, the half-made decision, the conversation you postponed. Read contracts slowly and sign when you are sure. And if someone from the past reappears, answer as the person you are now, at your own pace.

None of this means your life has to stop. Good things begin during retrogrades all the time. It simply means that when a decision can wait a day, you let it wait a day, and you give your words a little more care than usual.

At my table during the double retrograde

For these weeks I hold a small reading: the Mercury Retrograde Clarity Reading. You bring me one question about a message, an old contact or a decision that feels stuck, and I give you the answer first, in plain words, then the why, and then what to do now and what to let rest until Mercury moves forward again. It is on my table until 13 November. For the words that feel heaviest in these weeks, I wrote a separate letter on Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, with an old and gentle way of handling the ones that matter.

If it is an old love that has come back to mind, the Venus Retrograde Ritual is held only until Venus turns direct, and I wrote about it in Will my ex come back during Venus retrograde? If the weeks feel restless, Find Your Calm holds the quiet for you. And if you carry more than one question, the Questions Reading answers one, three or as many as you have.

See it, feel it, draw it in

Here is what I believe, and what I work with: what you hold in your mind with feeling, you draw towards you. A retrograde is a lovely time to practise that, because it turns your attention to what is unfinished, and what is unfinished is often exactly what you are ready to receive.

The days of the week still carry the planets in them, most clearly in French: mercredi is Mercury's day and vendredi is Venus's day. So on a Wednesday, choose one unfinished thing and finish it, however small: the reply you owe, the form you keep moving to the next pile. On the Friday that follows, light a candle and write one sentence about what you are worth, in the present tense, as if it is already completely true: "I am easy to love", "My work is valued", "I deserve the calm I give to others". Read it aloud and feel it land in your chest.

Then picture the middle of November: messages flowing, plans moving, your heart steady. Stay with that picture until you can feel the ease of it in your body. That feeling is the direction you are walking in.

What came back to my table

Every word that comes back to me after a reading means a great deal to me. These are a few, from people who came to my table looking for clarity.

"I was very pleased because she clarified my doubts"

Maria, September 2026

"Absolute fantastic reading that described my situation and provided warm guidance and perspective of multiple outcomes."

Kelly, September 2026

"After the reading, I felt comforted and more confident in myself."

Alicia, October 2026

I am grateful for each of them. Clarity rarely arrives as a thunderbolt. More often it is a quiet click, and these words remind me how much that click can mean.
