What happens at my table
There are few moments as full as the one right before a proposal: the ring in your pocket, the place you chose, the words you have practised and will probably forget. I love holding this moment, because it is pure hope.
Your name and theirs go on paper with the date and the place of the asking, turned towards each other, with two candles side by side, rose quartz between them and a few rose petals for the heart. I speak the blessing aloud in the present tense: this question asked clearly and from the heart, in a moment that feels like the two of you. I stay with it until the moment feels like yours, and I watch the two flames while I do.
Your report tells you what I felt around the two of you and what I worked with, and gives you one sentence to keep in your pocket beside the ring.
What I hold
The ring goes on the fourth finger because the Romans believed a vein ran from there straight to the heart. In Ireland the Claddagh shows two hands holding a heart, and the way it is worn tells the world what the wearer is ready for. Every custom around a proposal is a way of steadying the one who asks. Yes. Write "soon" and the place, if you know it, and I hold the moment as it comes. Tell me the date by reply when it is set, and I keep it with your name.
