11:11 meaning: why you keep seeing it, and how to make a wish on the 11/11 portal

It is one of the most common lines in the letters that reach my table: I keep seeing 11:11. What does it mean? On the oven clock, on a receipt, on the phone the second you pick it up. Once is a coincidence. The fourth time in a week, it starts to feel like someone tapping you on the shoulder.

In short: 11:11 is read, in numerology and in folk custom, as a doorway moment. It is a sign to notice what you are thinking right now, because it is being planted, and the old custom is simple: when you see 11:11, make a wish. Once a year the whole date lines up, on 11 November, and in 2026 that is Wednesday 11 November. Here is what 11:11 means, why it keeps finding you, and how to make a wish that holds.

What does 11:11 mean?

In numerology the number one is the beginning: the self, the first step, the seed. Eleven is called a master number, the number of intuition and of thresholds. Put four ones side by side and they look like what they are said to be: a doorway, two pillars and two more behind them, standing open.

Many people read 11:11 as a moment of synchronicity, the inner and the outer world lining up for a second, the way Carl Jung described meaningful coincidence. Others call it an angel number, a nudge from your guides that you are on the right path. Sceptics call it confirmation bias: you notice 11:11 because you are looking for it. I do not mind that at all. You notice what you are ready to notice, and a sign you are ready for is still a sign.

Why do I keep seeing 11:11?

In my experience it tends to come at three kinds of moments.

• At a crossroads. When a decision is close, and part of you already knows the answer.
• When you are thinking of someone. A person you love, a person you miss, or a person you are not sure about. Many people read it as that person thinking of them too.
• When your thoughts are running ahead of you. 11:11 is a reminder that what you think about with feeling is what you plant. If you catch yourself worrying at 11:11, turn the worry into a wish.

And sometimes, after a loss, it becomes the number of the one who is gone. If that is you, you are far from the only one; it is one of the signs people describe most.

What to do when you see 11:11

Stop for one breath. Notice what you were just thinking. If it is something you want, say it again silently, in the present tense, as if it is already yours: "I am living in my new home." If it is a fear, turn it round. Not "please don't let it rain", but "the sky is kind on my day". Then say thank you, and carry on. That is the whole practice, and it takes about as long as the minute itself.

What is the 11/11 portal?

Once a year the date itself lines up: the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Many people who work with intention call 11 November the 11/11 portal, the day the doorway stands widest, and at 11:11 on that day the ones line up on the clock and the calendar at once.

It is a young name for a very old threshold. In the old farming calendar, 11 November, Martinmas, closed the harvest year: rents fell due, workers were hired for the winter, and the new wine was poured. In Dutch and German towns children still walk through the dark with paper lanterns on St Martin's Day, singing from door to door. In the Rhineland and the south of the Netherlands the carnival season opens at 11:11 on 11 November. And in 1918 the guns of the First World War fell silent at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Whatever you believe about numbers, people have long treated this date as a doorway.

How to make an 11:11 wish that holds

Any 11:11 will do, but if you have one wish that matters more than the rest, save it for 11 November. You need a candle, a glass of water, a piece of paper and a pen.

1. Choose one wish. Not a list. The one you have not said out loud, the one that stays in the drawer.
2. Write it as already given. In the present tense, in your own words, with one true detail: "I wake up in the flat with the green door, and it is mine."
3. At 11:11, light the candle and set the water beside it. Either 11:11 on the clock is fine.
4. Read your wish aloud, slowly. Then close your eyes and step inside it for eleven breaths. Where are you? Who is with you? How do your shoulders feel? Feeling is what gives the words their weight.
5. Say thank you, as if it has already arrived. Gratitude is the portal to abundance.
6. Drink the water. It has taken on what you spoke over it.
7. Keep the paper where you will see it, and within eleven hours do one small thing the person in your wish would do.

Then let it go and stop checking. A wish that is watched every minute is a wish that is doubted.

What I do at my table on 11 November

Then I write to you: what I noticed while I held it, and how to carry your wish until it arrives. Your report is in your inbox the day after, on the 12th, and you can order until Tuesday 10 November.
