Venus retrograde 2026: what Venus is asking this autumn, and how to answer her

There is a question I hear more in autumn than in any other season, and it is rarely asked out loud. It sounds like "why is this coming back up" or "I thought I was done with this", and underneath it is the real one: am I still worth what I was hoping for.

If that question has been circling you lately, you are right on time. From 3 October the planet of love turns back for six weeks, and at my table I am making room for everything that has to do with the heart. This letter tells you what that means, what people have always done with it, and what you can do with it tonight.

What is Venus retrograde, and when is it in 2026?

From 3 October to 14 November 2026 Venus appears to move backwards through the sky, from Scorpio into Libra. It is a trick of the light, the way a train beside yours seems to slide backwards when it slows. In the old traditions these six weeks belong to love looked at again: old names return, and the question of your own worth asks for a better answer.

From 24 October Mercury turns retrograde too, so for almost three weeks both planets walk backwards together. I wrote about the dates and what this double retrograde asks of you in my letter on Mercury retrograde 2026.

Older than any of us

People have watched Venus for as long as they have written anything down. In Babylon her risings and settings were pressed into clay nearly four thousand years ago, under the name of Ishtar. The Maya kept her cycle in their painted books. Half of Europe still names a day after her: vendredi, viernes, venerdì, the day of Venus, our Friday. The rose and the myrtle were hers, copper was her metal, and the small circle with a cross beneath it that we still use for her is a hand mirror.

I love that last one most. Of all the things the old world could have given the planet of love, it gave her a mirror. Long before anyone used the word self-worth, people understood that love begins with how you look at yourself, and that every so often she turns around so that you will too.

What these weeks bring

These are the weeks in which old names come back into an inbox and people who had gone quiet write again. And more than anything, they are weeks in which you ask about yourself: what you gave, what you settled for, what you are worth. Venus brings the question back so that this time you can answer it properly.

Here is what I hold for you in these weeks. See it, feel it, draw it in

Here is what I believe, and what I work with every day. What you hold in your mind with feeling, you draw towards you, the way a magnet does. That is the heart of the law of attraction, and the old rituals for Venus knew it long before it had a name. A picture alone is a wish. The feeling is what gives it pull.

So on a Friday evening, her evening, light a candle and sit where you can see yourself in a mirror. Look at yourself the way you would look at someone you love. Then close your eyes and step into the love you want as if it is already here: the ease of being understood, the hand that reaches for yours without being asked, the laugh at the kitchen table. Stay inside the picture until you can feel it in your body, three slow breaths long. Then open your eyes and say one sentence aloud to the person in the mirror: I am chosen, and I choose myself first.

Do it every Friday until 14 November. It asks very little of you, and it changes who answers the door when love knocks. Your own choices are the strongest force there is, and choosing how you see yourself is the first of them.
