Crystal meanings

The stones at my table, and what each one carries.

Every stone I work with carries a meaning that people have given it over hundreds, sometimes thousands of years. These are my fifteen: the ten I set in rings and necklaces, and five that stay on my table. For each one you will find what it carries, when I reach for it, how to look after it and the ritual it belongs to. Stones carry meaning, not medicine: they are a reminder you can hold of what you asked for.

In my jewellery

Rose Quartz meaning

The stone of love, and of being gentle with yourself.

Rose quartz is the oldest love stone there is, and its meaning is wider than romance. It carries the softness you give to the person beside you and the softness you owe yourself, which is usually the harder of the two. People wear it when they open their heart again after a loss, when they are about to marry, or when they are learning to speak to themselves the way they speak to a friend. At my table it sits beside every love reading.

When I reach for it: a first date, a wedding day, a breakup, a hard week with yourself.

Pairs well with: Moonstone for new love, amethyst for a calmer heart.

Care: Keep it out of strong sun for long hours; the pink can fade.

Tiger's Eye meaning

Courage, focus, and a steady hand when money is on the line.

Tiger's eye is the stone for walking into the room and asking. Its golden bands shift in the light like an eye that stays open, and for centuries it was carried by people who needed nerve: traders, travellers, anyone about to negotiate. It stands for confidence, clear focus and money well handled. I put it beside my career and money rituals, and I would give it to anyone starting a job, a business or a difficult conversation about pay.

Amethyst meaning

Calm, clarity, and a boundary around what is yours.

Amethyst is the stone I reach for when a head is too full or a soul too open. The Greeks named it for a clear, sober mind, and that is still what it stands for: calm, clarity and protection. It settles what is restless and keeps what is not yours on the outside. People wear it for study, for grief, for busy days full of other people, and keep it by the bed at night. My protection rituals are lit with amethyst beside the candle.

Care: Keep it out of hot sun; the purple can fade over the years.

In my jewellery

Green Aventurine meaning

Luck, opportunity, and the next door opening.

Green aventurine is the old stone of luck. Its green holds a soft shimmer, like light on leaves, and gamblers, merchants and people setting out on a new road all carried it. It stands for opportunity and for growth that comes when a door opens: an application, a launch, a move, a first try at something new. Wear it when you would like the next door to be the right one, and when you want to notice the chances already in front of you.

Pairs well with: Sunstone for a fresh start, citrine for luck in trade.

Care: Easy to keep: rinse, dry, done.

In my jewellery

Amazonite meaning

Calm words, honest words, and hope.

Amazonite is the stone of calm communication. Its soft blue-green looks like shallow water, and it carries balance: saying what you mean, kindly, and hearing what is said without flinching. It has stood for hope since the ancient world. I give it to people before a conversation that matters, to people who swallow their words, and to anyone in a heavy season who would like things to feel lighter. It is also my stone for readings about pets, who speak without words.

ColourBlue-green
ChakraThroat, heart
ElementWater
Signs often linkedVirgo

When I reach for it: a conversation that matters, a heavy season, news you have to share.

Pairs well with: Lapis lazuli for speaking your truth, rose quartz for tender talks.

Care: A softer stone: no salt, no long soaks, no hot sun. Wipe it with a dry cloth.

In my jewellery

Lapis Lazuli meaning

Truth, wisdom, and seeing things as they are.

Lapis lazuli is a night sky in stone: deep blue with flecks of gold. For thousands of years it stood for truth and wisdom; it was ground into the blue of old paintings and laid in the tombs of pharaohs. It carries clarity: seeing your situation as it is and saying it plainly, without apology. Wear it when you have a decision to make, a truth to speak, or a year ahead that you want to look at with open eyes.

ChakraThird eye, throat

When I reach for it: a decision, a truth to tell, planning the year ahead.

Pairs well with: Amazonite for the conversation, clear quartz for focus.

Care: A softer stone: keep it away from salt, perfume and long soaks. Wipe it dry.

Green Agate meaning

Steady growth and roots that hold.

Green agate is a grounding stone. Agates form in layers, slowly, and that is exactly what this one stands for: steady progress rather than sudden leaps, and staying rooted while things around you change. It carries balance, growth and stability. It is a good stone for a new home, a new rhythm, or a year in which you are building something slowly and well, and it is the one I put beside readings about home.

ColourGreen, banded
ChakraHeart

When I reach for it: a new home, a new routine, a long build.

Pairs well with: African jade for a home that grows, black tourmaline for a safe one.

Care: Hard and easy: rinse and dry.

In my jewellery

Red Agate meaning

Strength, backbone, and finishing what you start.

Red agate is as warm as its colour. It is the stone of strength and courage, but the quiet kind: standing your ground, keeping going, finishing what you started. It carries stability and stamina, and I light my Seven-Day Candle Ritual beside it, because seven days of intention asks for exactly that. Wear it in a season that asks for backbone, or on a day when you need to walk into the room as yourself.

Pairs well with: Tiger's eye for courage, sunstone for warmth.

In my jewellery

African Jade meaning

Quiet prosperity, one good day at a time.

Jade has stood for prosperity, good fortune and long life for thousands of years, and African jade carries that meaning in a deep, earthy green. It is a stone of quiet growth: nothing loud, everything steady. It suits people who are building something that should last, whether that is savings, a business, a practice or a family home. I pair it with my money ritual for people who want abundance that stays, rather than one lucky week.

Sunstone meaning

Light on a grey day.

Sunstone is exactly what it sounds like. Its warm orange glitters when the light catches it, and it stands for warmth, joy and new beginnings: starting over with a lighter heart than you finished with. Between us, it is my own favourite, because it belongs to the weather spell people know me for. I keep one on my table for every good-weather ritual and for road openers, when a path needs to clear and a person needs to feel the sun on it again.

Clear Quartz meaning

The amplifier: it carries whatever you give it.

Clear quartz is the quiet worker of my table. It has no single meaning of its own; it carries and strengthens the intention you give it, which is why a point of it stands in the middle of every custom ritual I hold. It stands for clarity and focus. If you are drawn to many stones and cannot choose, start here, hold it in your hand and say out loud what you want it to carry.

Citrine meaning

Joy, abundance, and the merchant's luck.

Citrine is sunlight turned into stone, from clear yellow to honey gold. It is known as the merchant's stone, kept in tills and cash boxes for good trade, and it carries abundance, joy and confidence. Where tiger's eye is about nerve, citrine is about warmth: money that comes easily and is spent well. It sits beside my business rituals. Most golden citrine sold today is heated amethyst; the meaning travels with the colour, so I do not mind.

Black Tourmaline meaning

A boundary you can hold in your hand.

Black tourmaline is the protection stone. It is deep black, often ridged along its length, and it stands for grounding and for a boundary: what is yours stays in, what is not stays out. People keep it by the front door, on the desk, or in the bag they carry into difficult places. At my table it lies beside every house blessing, and I often suggest it to people who carry other people's moods home with them.

Moonstone meaning

Intuition, cycles, and beginning again with the moon.

Moonstone holds a soft blue light that moves when you turn it, like the moon behind a thin cloud. It is the stone of intuition and of cycles: beginnings, endings and the patience in between. It has long been linked with new love and with the rhythm of the moon, and it carries a gentle kind of hope. It lies on my table on the day of every new moon, under the intentions I write down for people.

Selenite meaning

Clearing, peace, and a clean slate.

Selenite is white and silky, with light running through it in lines. It takes its name from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, and it stands for clearing and peace: a clean slate, a quiet room, a mind that can breathe. I use a selenite wand to clear my table between readings, and it lies beside every cord cutting. It is soft and dissolves in water, so it is not a stone for jewellery; keep it on a windowsill or a nightstand.

Stones carry meaning, not medicine. For anything that concerns your health, please see a doctor.

How to choose your stone

There are three good ways, and none of them is wrong. Choose by intention: use the finder at the top of this page and start from what you need, whether that is love, money, calm or courage. Choose by pull: the stone you keep looking at is often the one you need, even if you cannot say why. Or let me choose with you: my stone quiz asks six small questions and tells you which stone belongs to this season of your life.

Drawn to a colour more than a stone? My guide to aura colours tells you what each colour holds, and a stone in that colour is an easy way to carry it.

How to wear it

An old tradition says the left hand receives and the right hand gives. Wear a ring on your left hand for what you want to draw in, such as love, luck or calm, and on your right hand for what you want to put out into the world, such as courage, a clear voice or a boundary. A necklace sits close to the heart, which suits rose quartz, aventurine and jade; amazonite and lapis lazuli sit well near the throat, where the words are. The stones that stay on my table belong on a desk, a nightstand or a windowsill, or by the front door.

Every ring and necklace I make is premium stainless steel with a natural stone, waterproof and hypoallergenic, and every piece leaves my table with an intention spoken over it for the person who will wear it. See all my jewellery.

How to look after your stones

Most stones only ask for a rinse under running water and a soft dry cloth. The softer ones (amazonite, lapis lazuli, moonstone) prefer a wipe to a soak, and selenite should never touch water at all. Rose quartz, amethyst and citrine keep their colour best out of strong sunlight. To clear a stone, many people leave it on a windowsill overnight under the full moon, or pass it through the smoke of a candle; then hold it for a moment and say its intention again. The steel of my jewellery does not mind water, but the stone is happiest when you dry it afterwards.

Meaning, not medicine

I believe stones carry meaning: the meaning people have given them for centuries, and the meaning you give them yourself when you choose one and wear it. They are a reminder you can see and touch of what you asked for. They are not medicine and they do not replace a doctor, a therapist or good advice; for anything that concerns your health, please see a professional.

Questions

What do crystals mean?

Each crystal carries a meaning that people have given it over time, often linked to its colour and its history. Rose quartz stands for love, amethyst for calm and protection, tiger's eye for confidence and money, citrine for abundance and moonstone for intuition. This page gives the meaning of fifteen stones, with their colour, chakra, element and the signs often linked to them.

Which crystal is best for love?

Rose quartz is the classic love stone, for romantic love and for being gentle with yourself. Moonstone is often chosen for new love and new beginnings, and amazonite for the honest conversations that love needs.

Which crystal is for money and luck?

Tiger's eye for confidence and money well handled, citrine for abundance and good trade, green aventurine for luck and opportunity, and African jade for prosperity that grows slowly and stays.

Which crystal is for protection?

Amethyst and black tourmaline are the two I reach for most. Amethyst keeps what is not yours on the outside and brings calm; black tourmaline is a grounding stone and a boundary you can hold in your hand. Selenite is used for clearing a space.

Which stone should I keep by my bed?

Amethyst, moonstone and selenite are the stones people most often keep on a nightstand, for a calm end to the day and for remembering dreams. Keep selenite dry.

Which hand should I wear a crystal ring on?

By old tradition, the left hand receives and the right hand gives. Wear the ring on your left hand for what you want to draw in, and on your right hand for what you want to send out. What matters most is that you wear it where you will see it.

How do I cleanse my crystals?

Rinse most stones under running water and dry them with a soft cloth, or leave them on a windowsill overnight under the full moon. Do not wash selenite, and do not soak amazonite, lapis lazuli or moonstone. Then hold the stone and say its intention again.

Can I wear more than one stone at once?

Yes. Many people wear two stones that work together, such as rose quartz with moonstone for love, or tiger's eye with citrine for money. Each stone on this page lists the stones it pairs well with.

Do crystals really work? Can they heal?

Stones carry meaning, not medicine. They can remind you, every time you see them, of the intention you chose, and that can change how you walk through a day. They cannot cure anything, and they do not replace a doctor or therapist.

Which of these stones are birthstones?

Of the fifteen stones on this page, amethyst is the birthstone for February, moonstone for June and citrine for November.

Are the stones in your jewellery real?

Yes. Every ring and necklace is premium stainless steel with a natural stone, waterproof and hypoallergenic, and each piece leaves my table with an intention spoken over it for the person who will wear it.
