Spirit animal meaning: how to find the animal that walks with you

Some animals keep finding you. This page is about what they may be bringing.

Spirit animals

I am Ivy, and when someone asks me which animal walks with them, I begin with another question: which animal keeps finding you?

This page gathers what twelve animals are often said to bring, how to recognise the one that walks with you, and a small way to feel it near. If you would like me to tell you your animal and its message, my Spirit Animal Reading is written for you alone.

What is a spirit animal?

A spirit animal is an animal whose nature mirrors something in you, or lends you something you need right now. It might be the courage of a wolf, the patience of a deer or the bright cleverness of a fox. People often feel a pull towards their animal long before they can say why, and once you know it, it becomes a quiet reminder of who you are when you are at your best.

How to know your spirit animal

Your animal usually makes itself known in small ways. It keeps crossing your path, on walks, in pictures, in the stories people happen to tell you. It visits your dreams. You have loved it since you were small without quite knowing why. Or it appears at a turning point, just when you needed the quality it carries. When the same animal finds you more than once, it is worth paying attention.

Dreams are one of the clearest places an animal shows itself. My guide to dream meanings tells you more about what an animal in a dream can mean.

Twelve animals and what they bring

Owl

The owl brings wisdom and the gift of seeing clearly when others cannot. If the owl walks with you, you are often the one who notices what is really going on, and your quiet knowing is worth trusting.

Wolf

The wolf brings loyalty, instinct and the strength of belonging. A wolf person loves their people fiercely and knows when to lead and when to run with the pack.

Fox

The fox brings cleverness, playfulness and the ability to find a way where there seemed to be none. When the fox appears, it often asks you to trust your own resourcefulness.

Bear

The bear brings strength, protection and the wisdom of rest. A bear knows that withdrawing to gather strength is part of being strong, and it often comes when you need to honour both.

Deer

The deer brings gentleness, grace and a heart that notices everything. Deer people are kind and sensitive, and their softness is a kind of courage.

Hare

The hare brings new beginnings, quick wit and a touch of magic. In the old stories of Britain and Ireland the hare was linked with the moon and with spring, and it often arrives when something fresh is ready to start.

Raven

The raven brings memory, insight and a voice that will not be ignored. It is a clever, curious bird, and when it finds you it often asks you to speak what you know.

Swan

The swan brings grace, devotion and the beauty of becoming. It reminds you that you can grow into who you are meant to be, at your own pace.

Butterfly

The butterfly brings transformation and lightness. It often appears in the middle of a change, as a gentle sign that what feels unfinished is turning into something lovely.

Bee

The bee brings community, sweetness and the joy of meaningful work. Bee people build good things with others, and they remind everyone around them that small efforts add up.

Horse

The horse brings freedom, strength and the drive to move forward. When the horse finds you, it often asks you to go after what you want with your whole heart.

Cat

The cat brings independence, curiosity and a deep sense of self. A cat knows its worth, rests when it needs to and trusts its own way of doing things.

Which reading is yours?

If you would like to know which animal walks with you now, what it brings and what it asks of you, the Spirit Animal Reading is a short reading written for you alone. You can tell me a little about your life at the moment, or simply send your name and birth date.

What happens at my table

  1. You send me your name

Your name, your birth date and, if you like, a few words about your life now.

  2. I sit with your name

I wait for the animal that comes forward, and I notice what it is carrying for you.

  3. I write to you

Your animal, its message and its gifts, in your inbox.

  4. And I stay with you

You can always reply to my e-mail: I read it and answer you.

An animal that walks beside you is an old idea

In the Old Norse sagas, written down in Iceland in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, a person could have a fylgja, a word that means one who follows. The fylgja was a companion spirit that went with a person through life, and it often showed itself in the shape of an animal, usually in dreams. Its shape fitted the person it followed: a bold, strong person might have a bear, a cunning one a fox.

Many peoples around the world hold their own sacred traditions of animal guides, and those belong to them. I work from the old stories of northern Europe and from what comes to my table. I love that so long ago people already felt what many still feel: that something with a gentle, animal nature walks beside them.

How I hold a spirit animal reading

Your animal describes a nature and a season, not a fixed label. The animal that comes forward now speaks to this part of your life and what it is asking of you, and it may change as you grow.

I read your animal to give you words and a picture for something you often already feel. What you do with it is yours, and that is exactly what makes it strong.

See it, feel it, draw it in

There is a part that is yours. Think of the animal that keeps finding you, or the one you have always loved. Close your eyes, breathe slowly and picture it walking beside you, already there. Feel what it lends you: its steadiness, its courage, its lightness. Notice how you stand and move with that quality in you.

Then give it something real: keep a small picture of your animal where you will see it, and when you need its gift, let the picture remind you that you already carry it.

Questions about spirit animals

What is my spirit animal?

Your spirit animal is the animal whose nature mirrors yours or lends you what you need right now. It often shows itself by crossing your path, visiting your dreams or being an animal you have loved for as long as you remember.

Can I have more than one spirit animal?

Yes. Many people feel one animal stays with them through life while others come and go for a season, bringing the quality that season needs.

Can my spirit animal change?

The animal that comes forward can change as your life changes. That is why a reading tells you about the animal that walks with you now, and what it asks of you in this part of your life.

What does it mean when an animal keeps crossing my path?

When the same animal keeps appearing, it is often worth asking what quality it stands for and where you need that quality in your life. Many people take it as a gentle sign to pay attention.

How does a Spirit Animal Reading work?

You send me your name, your birth date and, if you like, a few words about your life now. I sit with your name at my table and write to you which animal walks with you, its message and its gifts.

How much does a Spirit Animal Reading cost?

The Spirit Animal Reading starts at €2.22 for your animal and its message, with deeper versions at €5.55 and €11.11 that add its gifts, its signs and the season ahead.
