What happens at my table
Before a long trip, even seasoned travellers feel a small knot: the flight, the road, the crossing, the people left at home. I have held many departures, and underneath the wish is always the same. Go well, and come home whole.
Your name, your destination and your dates go on my table, with the names of everyone travelling with you, and around them the old travellers' things: a pinch of salt, a sprig of mugwort, amethyst for a calm passage and a candle for the road. I speak the blessing aloud in the present tense: this trip smooth and light, every hand that carries you steady, every door open at the right moment, and all of you home again, glad. I stay until the road feels clear.
Your report tells you what I felt around your trip and what I worked with, and gives you one sentence to say at the door before you leave.
What I hold
Travellers have always asked for company on the way. A sprig of rosemary in the coat, a medal of Saint Christopher on the dashboard, an omamori from a Japanese shrine in the bag, the old Irish words that ask the road to rise to meet you. The old ways knew what the law of attraction teaches: see yourself arriving, feel the ease of the last mile as if it is already behind you, and the journey begins to bend that way.
