Twice a day the clock shows 11:11, and a surprising number of people quietly make a wish. Once a year the calendar does the same. On 11 November the date itself reads 11/11, and all over the world people treat it as a gate: a day when a wish said clearly is a wish heard. What is the 11/11 portal?
In numerology, one is the number of beginnings, and eleven is a master number: two ones standing side by side like an open doorway. On 11 November that doorway appears twice, which is why the day is called a portal or a gate. People use it for one thing above all: to say out loud what they want to begin.
11/11 in 2026
In 2026 the 11th of November falls on a Wednesday, two days after the new moon of Monday 9 November. A young, growing moon is the old time for beginnings, so this year the gate opens under a sky that is already saying yes to new things.
Older than any of us
Wishing at 11:11 is one of the youngest customs we have, and it stands on something very old: the wish spoken at a threshold. The first star of the evening. A coin in a well. A candle on a birthday cake, blown out with the wish held silently behind closed eyes. The stroke of midnight at the turn of the year. In the old farming calendar, 11 November closed the harvest year, and in the Netherlands, Germany and Flanders children still walk through the dark that evening with lanterns, singing at every door. People have always chosen a moment, stood in it, and said what they hoped for. The moment gives the wish a shape.
How to write a wish that holds
- One wish. One wish, chosen, is stronger than ten that compete.
- As if it is already true. Write "I have found", where you would normally write "I hope to find". Present tense, first person, your own words.
- About your own life. A wish can include the people you love. It works on your road, and leaves everyone else free on theirs.
- With feeling. See it in detail and feel what it is like to live inside it: the relief, the pride, the quiet joy. What you hold in your mind with feeling, you draw towards you like a magnet. That is the law of attraction, and it is the oldest part of every wishing custom there is.
A small ritual for 11:11
At 11:11 in the morning or the evening, light a candle and read your wish aloud, once, slowly. Close your eyes and stand inside it for three slow breaths. Say thank you, as if it has already arrived, and blow the candle out yourself. Then, and this is what turns a wish into a life, do one small thing that day that the person who already has this wish would do. Keep the paper where you will see it for the next eleven days.
What I hold at my table
On Wednesday 11 November I hold The 11/11 Wish Gate. Your name and your date of birth go on paper at my table, and beneath them your one wish, exactly as you wrote it.
