How to choose your stone
There are three good ways, and none of them is wrong. Choose by intention: use the finder at the top of this page and start from what you need, whether that is love, money, calm or courage. Choose by pull: the stone you keep looking at is often the one you need, even if you cannot say why. Or let me choose with you: my stone quiz asks six small questions and tells you which stone belongs to this season of your life.
Drawn to a colour more than a stone? My guide to aura colours tells you what each colour holds, and a stone in that colour is an easy way to carry it.
How to wear it
An old tradition says the left hand receives and the right hand gives. Wear a ring on your left hand for what you want to draw in, such as love, luck or calm, and on your right hand for what you want to put out into the world, such as courage, a clear voice or a boundary. A necklace sits close to the heart, which suits rose quartz, aventurine and jade; amazonite and lapis lazuli sit well near the throat, where the words are. The stones that stay on my table belong on a desk, a nightstand or a windowsill, or by the front door.
Every ring and necklace I make is premium stainless steel with a natural stone, waterproof and hypoallergenic, and every piece leaves my table with an intention spoken over it for the person who will wear it. See all my jewellery.
How to look after your stones
Most stones only ask for a rinse under running water and a soft dry cloth. The softer ones (amazonite, lapis lazuli, moonstone) prefer a wipe to a soak, and selenite should never touch water at all. Rose quartz, amethyst and citrine keep their colour best out of strong sunlight. To clear a stone, many people leave it on a windowsill overnight under the full moon, or pass it through the smoke of a candle; then hold it for a moment and say its intention again. The steel of my jewellery does not mind water, but the stone is happiest when you dry it afterwards.
Meaning, not medicine
I believe stones carry meaning: the meaning people have given them for centuries, and the meaning you give them yourself when you choose one and wear it. They are a reminder you can see and touch of what you asked for. They are not medicine and they do not replace a doctor, a therapist or good advice; for anything that concerns your health, please see a professional.
Questions
What do crystals mean?
Each crystal carries a meaning that people have given it over time, often linked to its colour and its history. Rose quartz stands for love, amethyst for calm and protection, tiger's eye for confidence and money, citrine for abundance and moonstone for intuition. This page gives the meaning of fifteen stones, with their colour, chakra, element and the signs often linked to them.
Which crystal is best for love?
Rose quartz is the classic love stone, for romantic love and for being gentle with yourself. Moonstone is often chosen for new love and new beginnings, and amazonite for the honest conversations that love needs.
Which crystal is for money and luck?
Tiger's eye for confidence and money well handled, citrine for abundance and good trade, green aventurine for luck and opportunity, and African jade for prosperity that grows slowly and stays.
Which crystal is for protection?
Amethyst and black tourmaline are the two I reach for most. Amethyst keeps what is not yours on the outside and brings calm; black tourmaline is a grounding stone and a boundary you can hold in your hand. Selenite is used for clearing a space.
Which stone should I keep by my bed?
Amethyst, moonstone and selenite are the stones people most often keep on a nightstand, for a calm end to the day and for remembering dreams. Keep selenite dry.
Which hand should I wear a crystal ring on?
By old tradition, the left hand receives and the right hand gives. Wear the ring on your left hand for what you want to draw in, and on your right hand for what you want to send out. What matters most is that you wear it where you will see it.
How do I cleanse my crystals?
Rinse most stones under running water and dry them with a soft cloth, or leave them on a windowsill overnight under the full moon. Do not wash selenite, and do not soak amazonite, lapis lazuli or moonstone. Then hold the stone and say its intention again.
Can I wear more than one stone at once?
Yes. Many people wear two stones that work together, such as rose quartz with moonstone for love, or tiger's eye with citrine for money. Each stone on this page lists the stones it pairs well with.
Do crystals really work? Can they heal?
Stones carry meaning, not medicine. They can remind you, every time you see them, of the intention you chose, and that can change how you walk through a day. They cannot cure anything, and they do not replace a doctor or therapist.
Which of these stones are birthstones?
Of the fifteen stones on this page, amethyst is the birthstone for February, moonstone for June and citrine for November.
Are the stones in your jewellery real?
Yes. Every ring and necklace is premium stainless steel with a natural stone, waterproof and hypoallergenic, and each piece leaves my table with an intention spoken over it for the person who will wear it.
